New Delhi: Coronavirus cases are rapidly rising in India, and many people have also succumbed to this disease. Coronaviruses (CoV) can be described as the viruses that belong to a large family of viruses inviting serious respiratory illnesses if not taken care of at the right time. Many patients having an acute heart attack (a condition that may occur when one’s flow of blood to the heart is blocked) will find it difficult to take care of themselves during the pandemic.
Symptoms of an acute heart attack
The symptoms of an acute heart attack may be chest pain, nausea, digestion, vomiting, tiredness, and even light-headedness that tend to overlap with COVID-19. Though, the symptoms tend to vary depending on person to person. Heart attack can be a result of a faulty lifestyle, obesity, diabetes, cholesterol, and family history, etc.
Management of acute heart attack during the COVID-19 era
If you or your loved one is suffering from an acute heart attack, the following tips suggested by Dr Ravi Gupta, cardiologist, Wockhardt Hospital, South Bombay, may help you manage the condition:
- If someone suffers from an acute heart attack, immediately take him/her from an ambulance to the hospital in order to get prompt treatment. Don’t let the person drive himself or walk. Speak to the doctor about the medications to be given on time.
- Once you overcome the heart attack, try to stay physically active by exercising every day. You can walk at home or go out in the park, do aerobics and yoga, or practice relaxation techniques such as yoga and meditation to de-stress. You will have to stay stress-free and recover fast during COVID-19.
- Do not venture out of the house if not needed and avoid being around sick people that can further invite more problems. See to it that you have enough stock of medication at your house, this will help you avoid making trips to the medical shops. As once you step out you may be at risk of getting infected with the coronavirus.
- While at home, try to follow social distancing norms, cover your mouth and face with a mask, and sanitize your hands from time to time. Also, do don’t forget to wash your hands properly to maintain good hand hygiene. See to it that you do not touch any surfaces like doorknobs, door handles, switches, as there is a risk of infection from these sources.
- Eat right and stay healthy and hearty. Practice mindful eating. Do not just go overboard on junk, oily, processed, and salty foods. Stick to a proper diet plan. If necessary, consult an expert regarding the foods you MUST eat and avoid. Try to swear by fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains, pulses, nuts, and legumes. Eat all these in the quantity recommended by your expert. Do not eat foods loaded with unhealthy fats, carbohydrates, and artificial flavours. Stick to home-made food with minimal oil content.
- Sleep properly and rest as advised by the doctor.
- Stay in touch with your family members via telephone or video call, in case you’re away from home. Open up about your feelings to your loved one. Try to do activities that you like painting or gardening.
- Get flu shots to keep influenza at bay.
- Opt for telemedicine or video consultation instead of stepping out during the pandemic.
- Do not forget to monitor your blood pressure, blood sugar levels, and cholesterol from time to time
