Demi Lovato Suffered Heart Attack, Three Strokes in 2018 Overdose

We are so so thankful that Demi Lovato is still with us.

In the new trailer for the YouTube documentary Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil, the 28-year-old singer and actor bares it all and gets frank about her mental health and addiction struggles, even revealing how close she came to dying following her overdose in 2018.

In July of that year, Lovato was rushed to the hospital for a heroin overdose, and nearly died. She was hospitalized for two weeks and then entered an in-patient rehab facility. But until now, we didn’t know just how close to death she was.

“I had three strokes, I had a heart attack, my doctors said I had five to ten more minutes…” she says in the trailer. “I’ve had a lot of lives, like my cat, you know, I’m on my ninth life.” It’s terrifying to hear. 

The documentary looks to be full of heavy, and somber moments like that. “I’ve had so much to say over the past two years, wanting to set the record straight about what it was that happened,” Lovato says at the beginning of the trailer. “Any time that you suppress a part of yourself, it’s gonna overflow.”

Lovato has always been open and frank about her mental health and addiction issues, even releasing songs about her struggles. But this documentary looks to be an even deeper dive than we’ve previously seen. “I crossed a line that I had never crossed.”

The flm also features in-depth and revealing interviews with those closest to Lovato, and they don’t hold back. “She should be dead,” “You don’t want the true story from me,” “I can’t believe ya’ll are doing this,” her friends say. Her parents add that, “Demi’s good at making you believe she’s okay,” as her sister agrees, “Demi’s very good at hiding what she needs to hide.”

Whether you’re a long time fan or a casual listener, this documentary looks to be one of the most powerful music documentaries to come out in years.

Demi Lovato: Dancing With the Devil also features interviews with fellow artists like Elton John and Christina Aguilera. It was directed by Michael D. Ratner. The documentary will premiere on YouTube March 23.
