Dean Jones in 1992: The cricket world pays tribute.

The cricketing world including many of the greatest ever to play the game have paid tribute to Australian cricketing icon Dean Jones, who died at age 59 in Mumbai on Thursday.

Jones was part of Indian television’s Star Sports commentary team for the IPL and is understood to have collapsed in his hotel room, with Indian media reporting he suffered a major heart attack.

The Victorian played 52 Test matches for Australia, but is widely admired for revolutionising the one-day format.

Most notable of his Test performances was a remarkable effort in Madras during the tour of 1986 where, battling illness and dehydration in the extreme Indian heat, Jones defied all odds to make 210 runs, before being rushed to hospital and placed on a drip after an innings that has since become iconic.

Since retiring from professional cricket, Jones had become a staple of cricket commentary and took up coaching in Pakistan.

Many of the biggest names in cricket history and people from all walks of life have taken to social media to pay their respects to Jones, while voicing their shock at the tragic news.

This is awful about Dean Jones. Just remembered him earlier today in a tweet on an unrelated subject. Just bloody awful. #RIP
