Coronavirus infections jumped dramatically and deaths continued a slow but steady rise, the Yucatan health ministry’s briefing revealed Tuesday.

Hospitalizations jumped again by double digits when 12 patients were admitted for a total of 277.

Authorities found 176 new positive cases — including 144 in Merida — and recorded 13 deaths, as high a daily fatality count Yucatan has seen since the coronavirus crisis began in March. Daily deaths broke into the triple digits a week ago when 203 people died.

Since the first infections were found, 4441 confirmed cases have been found in Yucatan. The real number is certain to be much higher, medical experts have said. Accumulated death total 461.

Another 104 patients recovered in the past 24 hours and 667 active patients are in stable condition and living under quarantine at home.

A 38-year-old man from Kanasín with hypertension and diabetes was the youngest to die. A 90-year-old woman from Mérida with hypertension and diabetes was the oldest. Most victims had pre-existing conditions that likely complicated treatment.
